What I’m Planning to Read Aloud to My Girls in 2026
There is nothing I love more than coming up with a list of books to read aloud with my girls. If you’d like a printable copy of this read aloud list just pop in your email address below and it’ll come right to your inbox!
One of my favorite things about parenting is reading aloud to my kids at night before bed.
We have so many fun shared memories because of the books we’ve read together and I love this simple way to calm everyone down at the end of the evening.
This past year, we spent the majority of our read-alouds on the Little House on the Prairie series which my younger girls didn’t remember at all and it was a delight to read those straight through.
This year, as usual, I’m making a list of books I’m hoping to read aloud to my four kids this year.
Here are the books I’m hoping to get to:
Our Read Aloud Book List for 2026

Mystery In Rocky Mountain National Park by Aaron Johnson
Several families in our neighborhood have RAVED about this series and we bought it for Tally for Christmas (when I mentioned it on Instagram, I got a whole other flood of messages from people saying how much they and their kids loved it). I think it’ll be fun to read the first one together!

The Rover’s Story by Jasmine Warga
When I asked for books for kids who loved The Wild Robot, this one came up a million times and I’ve never read it! And ever since I read and loved The Martian, I do have a passing interest in Mars!

The Umbrella Mouse by Anna Fargher
I love some historical fiction in our read-alouds and this one has stellar reviews and is set during WWII but featuring animals more heavily than most do. I think this one will be a hit.

No Purchase Necessary by Maria Marianayagam
This is a book club pick for 2026 and I often like to read them aloud to my kids during the summer. This one is about a boy who gets peer-pressured into stealing a candy bar and then, when the boy who told him to do it, rejects it, he opens it to discover it is a million dollar prize winning candy bar.

Which Witch? by Eva Ibbotson
I was planning to have this as our October/Halloween read aloud the past few years, but then time slipped away so hoping we can squeeze it in this year! The reviews on this one are excellent and it looks so fun and funny, which I love in a Halloween book (legit scary is NOT for me).

The Paper Bag Christmas by Kevin Alan Milne
I’m always on the lookout for new Christmas chapter books to read in December to my kids and I’m excited about this one where two brothers volunteer at a children’s hospital for the holidays and discover that the real magic of Christmas comes from compassion and connection – especially through one brave little girl who helps them see the season in a whole new way.
