How to Get a Refund on a Kindle Book Purchase

If you’ve been around here for awhile, you know I absolutely love my Kindle.

Last year I wrote a post about how to purchase Kindle books, which is an easy way to build up your library. But what if you purchase a Kindle book, get a few pages in and realize the language or voice isn’t for you?

Or worse, what if you accidentally buy a Kindle book you didn’t mean to buy (or your toddler gets ahold of your Kindle and goes on an ebook shopping spree).

Good news! You can easily return a Kindle book!

(This also means that if you take a chance on an the Kindle version of a book I recommend and then decide I have the worst taste ever? You’re out nothing!)

A few things to note about receiving a refund for Kindle book purchase:

First, you can only return a Kindle book within 7 days of your purchase date. So if you’ve been hanging onto a Kindle eboook for 6 months and never read it, it will not have the option to return.

Second, you can’t read the entire Kindle book, decide you didn’t like it and then request a refund. Amazon doesn’t specify the amount you can read, but word on the street is anything past about 10% read will be denied a return. Also, if you have a high rate of return requests in your account history, you might no longer have the option to return. So don’t try to treat buying Kindle books like a lending library!

Third, you can only request a refund for a Kindle book from your desktop.

Here’s how you can return a Kindle book:

Start out by logging in to your Amazon account from a desktop.

Go this this Return a Kindle Book Order page.

Click on “Start Your Kindle Book Return.”

Next, click “Digital Orders” allowing you to see all of your content purchases.

Find the Kindle book you would like to return. Select “Return for a Refund.”

It will then ask you the reason you are returning. Select your reason, click submit and there you have it! Your Kindle book has been returned and you have received a refund!
