Buy Less, Buy Better: The Everygirl’s 2026 Consumption Rules

I love a little style refresh. A new color trend taking over my closet here, a cozy home find there, and the occasional “why not?” purchase—like the brief moment I truly believed Tabi shoes could look just as good on me as they did on Zendaya. But as the year slows down, the purchases add up—both in my bank account and around my home. Storage gets messier, drawers get fuller, Depop listings get longer, and suddenly it’s abundantly clear that I didn’t need most of the random shit I bought. What’s worse? Some purchases haven’t even seen the light of day and probably never will… This leads me to the question I should have been asking before each of my purchases, instead of after: “Do I actually need any of this?”

With the new year in full swing, many of us are feeling the weight of overconsumption and pondering ways to buy better (and buy less). TikTok users, like Michela Allocca, have started sharing “consumption rules” for 2026, with a list of gentle guardrails for shopping more mindfully, and our editors (myself included) were inspired.

Motivated by the conversation and that desperate-to-declutter new year feeling, we’re rounding up our own list of consumption rules. From donating one item for every new purchase to finally unsubscribing from those retail emails that tempt impulse purchases, here are the small shifts we’re making to avoid overconsumption—without losing the fun of playing with something new every now and then.

The Everygirl’s 2026 consumption rules:

  1. Only buy natural fibers when shopping for clothes. Is the sweater polyester? 100% cotton? One of our editors noted that shopping for more natural fibers has helped her curb shopping impulses and ensure the things she purchases actually last beyond one season.
  2. Rent books from the library instead of buying new copies.
  3. Only buy beauty or home products when you are actually out of them.
  4. Borrow outfits from friends instead of always buying new.
  5. Only complete online purchases from a laptop or desktop. Buying from your phone makes impulse purchases feel effortless. To slow yourself down, create a barrier by only making purchases on your laptop or desktop. That extra step adds friction and ultimately helps prevent unnecessary purchases.
  6. Check “buy nothing” Facebook groups before buying new. When shopping for home items like furniture, our editors recommend scrolling through “buy nothing” groups on Facebook before immediately jumping to your favorite retail site. It’s basically a local online forum where people in your community can share, request, or give items they no longer need… for FREE.
  7. Donate one item for every new one purchased.
  8. Wait 72 hours before buying anything.
  9. Limit salon spending to special occassions.
  10. Follow the ‘buy once, cry once’ rule. Invest in one well-made, versatile piece instead of repeatedly replacing cheap fast-fashion items—like constantly rebuying white T-shirts when the old ones fall apart.
  11. Complete a closet refresh quarterly to accurately asses wardrobe needs. Four times a year, take a closer look at your closet. Take stock of what you actually wear, donate the rest, and make room for the items you really want to invest in that season.
  12. Thrift first, then look for new.
  13. Edit beauty routine to only include a handful of signature products. Instead of swapping products every week, focus on a few “ride or die” staples that actually work for you. This can help you shop—and use—beauty items more intentionally.
  14. Only invest in home items that can fit into a future space.
  15. Spend only from a “fun” fund. Set aside a small, guilt-free fund just for trend experiments or spontaneous finds. That way, you can still have the thrill of an impulse buy without blowing your whole budget on them. Plus, this helps keep a cap on how often you’re doing it.
  16. Budget for experiences, not just stuff. Set aside part of your budget for experiences, ensuring your money goes beyond bills and impulse buys and toward meaningful, non-material fulfillment.
  17. Unfollow brands and influencers that tempt you to spend.
  18. No new retail email sign-ups. Don’t allow any more tempting marketing emails into your inbox.
  19. Only buy coffee out when socializing or networking.
  20. No more buying things you already have a “collection” of. Think: water bottles, mugs, candles, phone cases, lip glosses, claw clips.
