4 Books I’m Currently Reading (+ My Team’s Picks!)

I feel like I’m just barely taking a breath after our Boston trip and all the prep for Halloween costumes.

Every year, people ask how I convince our kids to do a family costume and my answer is always that our kids are driving it, 100%. Frankly, Bart and I would be thrilled to not dress up at all, but our kids are all in on the family costumes so here we are.

In the meantime, I’m trying to squeeze in some reading – here is what I’m reading right now:

The Academy by Elin Hilderbrand and Shelby Cunningingham
This was one of my books for my October Book of the Month box and I’m pretty into it! Boarding school book? Feels perfect for this time of year! This is the book I’m picking up when we do family reading each day as part of homeschool.

The Great and Only Barnum: The Tremendous, Stupendous Life of Showman P. T. Barnum by Candace Fleming
We’ve been listening to The Greatest Showman soundtrack for years and then my girls rediscovered their love of it when our Airbnb in Vermont had a record player with this record. We watched the movie this past weekend and I picked up this book to read to them so they’d know the real story behind the movie (I read it years ago and loved it – you can see my full review here)!

It’s Different This Time by Ferdelle Capistrano
This fall romance set in New York City in a brownstone apartment has been getting so much buzz so I just grabbed the audio for it and have been listening on my morning walks. So far I’m not totally sold, but it’s intriguing enough that I’ve kept listening.

A Merry Little Lie by Sarah Morgan
I finished my first holiday read of the season on our Boston trip and now I’m on to my second. I had a GREAT string of holiday reads last year, so I’m hoping this year is equally good! This one is about multiple characters coming home for Christmas, all with secrets they’re keeping.

And here’s what my team is reading right now!

Analese

prison healer

The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni
YA fantasy is not my typical genre, but that’s what book clubs are really good for – pushing you out of your comfort zone. All about survival, love and some magic mixed in, this one has been excellent! I will admit, there have been some slow parts, however the amazing parts make up for it and I cannot wait to read the second one!

Jennifer

Unsouled by Will Wight
This book is quite different from my usual genre, but my husband has been trying to get me to start this twelve-book series for over two years. Since he’s now nearly finished with Emma M. Lion, Volume 8 after I convinced him to read it, I figured it was only fair to return the favor and try his recommendation. Unsouled follows the journey of Lindon, a boy born without a soul or a defined path to advance to higher levels of power. He must rely on his wits and resourcefulness to protect his homeland in a way only he can.

Kelsey

The Tenant by Freida McFadden
Freida McFadden is best known for The Housemaid (which I also read and loved), but this thriller proves she’s got plenty more twists up her sleeve. It follows Blake, recently fired from his high-profile job, who rents out a room in the brownstone he shares with his fiancée to make ends meet. Their new tenant, Whitney, seems sweet and perfect…maybe too perfect. And of course, things are not at all what they seem.
